The power of Twitter

If you were ever in any doubt about the power of Social Media then it’s time to wake up and smell the coffee!

Yesterday  (1st of August 2010) Twitter reached the giddy heights of  20 billion Tweets. When seen in isolation that figure may not seem very significant but when you take into account the  statistics associated with it, it takes a whole new life of its own.

Twitter reaches 20 billion tweetsTwitter opened for public use n the 15th July 2006 having been used as an in house communications medium by the Podcasting company Odeo.

By 2007 Twitter was seeing 400,000 posts per quarter.

By March 2010 a landmark 10 Billion tweets had been made.

This equates to 916 tweets per second.  That means that it is only going to take just 10 days to add a further 1 Billion tweets.

This means it took 43 months to reach its first 10 billion tweets, but just 5 months to rack up it’s 2nd 10 billion tweets

And by early December Twitter will have reached 30 billion tweets, taking just 4 months.

With access to this volume of active  and engaged participants it’s little wonder that businesses are using it more and more.
